Understanding Saree Fabrics: Cotton vs Khadi vs Tussar

Choosing the right saree often comes down to one essential question: which fabric? With so many beautiful weaves available, it can be overwhelming to decide. At Saachi Sarees, we believe that understanding your fabric is the first step to finding a saree you will truly love. Here is a simple guide to three of our most popular fabric types — Cotton, Khadi, and Tussar.

Cotton Sarees

Best for: Everyday wear, office, warm weather

Cotton is the most breathable and comfortable fabric for Indian summers. It is lightweight, easy to drape, and available in a stunning range of weaves — from the fine Dhonekhali and Mul cotton to the structured Cotton Linen blend.

Key characteristics:

  • Highly breathable and moisture-absorbent
  • Easy to wash and maintain at home
  • Gets softer with every wash
  • Ideal for daily wear and long working hours
  • Available in vibrant prints and subtle handloom weaves

Care tip: Wash in cold water, dry in shade, and iron on medium heat while slightly damp.

Khadi Sarees

Best for: Casual wear, festive occasions, conscious fashion

Khadi is hand-spun and hand-woven, making each piece truly one of a kind. It carries the legacy of India’s freedom movement and represents slow, sustainable fashion at its finest. Khadi sarees have a distinctive texture — slightly coarser than mill-made cotton — that gives them a rustic, earthy charm.

Key characteristics:

  • Handcrafted — no two pieces are identical
  • Warm in winter, cool in summer (natural temperature regulation)
  • Eco-friendly and sustainably produced
  • Develops a beautiful drape and softness over time
  • Often features natural dyes and minimal embellishment

Care tip: Hand wash gently in cold water. Avoid harsh detergents. Air dry flat to retain shape.

Tussar Silk Sarees

Best for: Festive occasions, weddings, special events

Tussar (also called Kosa silk) is a wild silk produced by silkworms that feed on forest trees. It has a rich, golden-beige natural colour and a distinctive texture that sets it apart from cultivated silk. Tussar sarees are prized for their natural sheen, earthy tones, and the way they drape with quiet elegance.

Key characteristics:

  • Natural golden or ivory base colour
  • Slightly textured surface with a matte-to-subtle sheen
  • Lightweight yet rich in appearance
  • Takes natural and vegetable dyes beautifully
  • Often paired with hand-painted or block-printed motifs

Care tip: Dry clean recommended. If hand washing, use cold water and a very mild detergent. Never wring. Store wrapped in a muslin cloth.
